The Therapeutic Effect of Gardening for the Social Rehabilitation of Chronic Schizophrenic Patients

Abstract
Object£º Gardening improves the cognitive function & social interaction of psychiatric patients. The improvement of cognitive function in chronic schizophrenic patients is related to the good result of social skill acquisition training. In the study, we compared the cognitive function & symptoms of chronic schizophrenia patients before gardening with after that.

Method£º Thirty three chronic schizophrenic patients were assigned to gardening. Neuropsychological test & symptom scale for pretest-posttest(5months later) comparison consisted of Digit span, calculation, Digit Symbol Substitution Task from Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III(DSST), Traio-Making Test-A(TMTA), Scale for the Assessment of Positive symptoms(SAPS), Scale for the Assessment of Negative symptoms(SANS), Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale(BPRS) .

Result£º The gardening group showed significantly improvement in DSST & TMTA. There was no relationship between symptoms & cognitive function test. The gardening group especially in negative schizophrenic patients also showed significantly improvement in DSST & TMTA.

Conclusion£º Gardening for chronic schizophrenia patients, especially negative schizophrenic patients can have benefits related to the cognitive improvement, social function, interpersonal relationship, & vocational training.
